Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment
When people arrive at our California substance abuse treatment facility, they often find that their addiction co-exists with other mental health disorders. Due to the complex nature of substance abuse, these co-occurring disorders are often difficult to diagnose and treat without the assistance of trained addiction professionals. When a person is dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues like depression or anxiety, it can have a devastating effect on both their physical and mental well-being. Having a mental health condition in addition to a substance or alcohol use disorder is often referred to as dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder.
In these cases, it is important to treat both the addiction and underlying mental health conditions in order to achieve the best results.
At our rehab center in Huntington Beach, we offer a complete dual diagnosis treatment plan, in addition to your treatment plan for substance abuse, that addresses any co-occurring disorders. In doing so, we provide the necessary medical support to instill a lasting recovery from addiction. For example, common co-occurring disorders include:
- Depression and other depressive disorders
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorders
- Personality disorders
Our experience with co-occurring disorders continues to solidify the importance of dual-diagnosis treatment. For this reason, each individual is provided with the proper mental health support along with addiction therapy. In doing so, our medical team is able to provide the best outcomes for clients with mental illness.
Addressing co-occurring conditions holistically and treating both addiction and mental health simultaneously provides our clients the ability to progress along the path of recovery more effectively and confidently. At our Huntington Beach, California addiction treatment location, the clinical and support staff will work with you to ensure your co-occurring disorders are both explained and treated. Our team of experienced therapists is trained to assess your unique situation and create tailored treatment plans that incorporate both substance abuse counseling and mental health therapy.

About Our Inpatient Programs in California
Holistic Rehabilitation
All of our programs follow a holistic approach to recovery, meaning that we are focused on providing recovery to the mind, body, and spirit through behavioral therapies and individually concentrated care.
Inpatient Treatment
During the inpatient portions of treatment, which include our medical detox and inpatient residential programs, we separate men and women completely. Women will live in one of our houses with all-female peers, while men will reside in another home with all-male peers for treatment. The clinical decision to separate genders during these significant stages of early recovery was made to keep the focus on healing. Male and female dependency can often develop during these vulnerable stages of early recovery, which is one reason we men and women live separately and attend group therapy sessions with peers of the same gender. Another reason for the separation during these levels of care is that we are a trauma-focused treatment center, and many of our clients are coming to us with a trauma history that may be exacerbated or triggered by the opposite sex. Until clinical work is done surrounding these traumas, we will keep men and women separated during treatment.
Do you accept couples?
Yes, we do accept couples who are looking to attend treatment at the same time. We will not permit couples to live together during treatment, as our goal is for each partner to do work on themself before reuniting. We look to strengthen the relationship you and your partner have by strengthening each whole person first.

Entering Addiction Treatment in California
Addiction is a serious problem for both men and women, but a person’s environment and geography can impact the ability to both become addicted and overcome addiction. Why? There are some regions across the United States that have been hit harder by the opioid crisis. Many more rural communities have less resources for recovery, like 12-step support groups and recovery initiatives. Additionally, a person with a severe substance use disorder has had years to develop an environment that supports his or her substance abuse, including friends who partake in using substances together, connections within the community to obtain substances, places they can go to use substances, etc.
For these reasons, among many others, it is recommended for severe substance use disorder cases to attend treatment away from home. This change of environment helps to break ingrained associations, as well as provides relief from triggers— allowing for the individual to focus solely on his or her recovery. This change is also shown to reduce instances of leaving treatment before completing the program. Although leaving your comfort zone may come with challenges, traveling for addiction treatment could end up being what saves your life.
It is important that you remove yourself from any negative environmental influences to recover from long-term substance abuse. Over the years of abusing substances and engaging in behaviors related to addiction, many people establish a toxic living environment that supports their drug abuse. To successfully recover from addiction, traveling for treatment can provide the change and safety needed.
By traveling for treatment, you can enter into a private treatment environment with qualified medical care, away from people and scenarios that promote old patterns of behavior. If you are truly looking for a change, take a break from the people, places, and things that could easily lead back down the road toward alcohol or drug use. Doing this will give you the best chance for re-establishing your health both mentally and physically.
If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
We are here to help because we’ve been there.
