According to the 2023 United States National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 48.5 million Americans currently struggle with substance abuse and addiction. Substance use disorder (SUD), also known as addiction, is a complex and chronic brain disorder in which a person compulsively uses substances due to a physical and psychological dependence.
At South Coast Behavioral Health, we offer specialized treatment for a wide range of substance use disorders, including:
Each form of addiction brings its own set of challenges, with different substances demanding different approaches to treatment and recovery. That is why our addiction treatment addresses the specific needs of each person, offering personalized care to help them transform their lives for the better.
Alcohol addiction, also known as alcoholism or alcohol use disorder (AUD), is a chronic disease characterized by the inability to control alcohol consumption despite adverse consequences. The development of alcohol addiction is influenced by various factors, including genetics, environmental factors, social and peer influences, and psychological factors like stress or trauma. Symptoms of alcohol addiction can range from increased tolerance and withdrawal symptoms to neglecting responsibilities, continued use despite problems, and unsuccessful attempts to quit or cut down.
If you or someone you know exhibits signs of alcohol addiction, seeking help is essential. Early intervention can prevent the progression of the disorder and reduce the risk of severe health consequences, including liver disease, cardiovascular problems, and mental health issues.
Drug addiction, or substance use disorder (SUD), involves the compulsive use of a substance despite negative consequences. Abusing drugs, whether by taking higher doses or using them for non-medical purposes, can have serious consequences.
Over time, individuals who misuse drugs may develop tolerance and require larger amounts to feel the same effects. This can lead to physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop using these drugs. The longer someone struggles with drug abuse, the more devastating the impacts of the addiction becomes, affecting the person’s physical and mental health, relationships, and overall quality of life.
At South Coast, we treat a wide range of drug addictions, including:
Opioids include prescription painkillers like oxycodone and illicit drugs such as heroin. Opioids work by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and body to produce pain relief and a sense of euphoria that can be highly addictive.
Commonly abused opioids include:
The physical pain relief from opioids also makes them appealing for those suffering from chronic pain or seeking temporary relief from emotional distress. As such, opioid addiction often starts with legitimate pain management but can progress to misuse and dependence. It can also occur through recreational use or exposure to opioids through family and friends. Regardless of how it starts, opioid addiction can have devastating consequences on an individual’s health, relationships, and overall well-being.
Opioid addiction is typically treated with medication-assisted treatment which combines the use of FDA-approved medications such as methadone or buprenorphine along with drug addiction counseling and behavioral therapy.
Benzodiazepines are a class of sedative medications commonly used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. These drugs work by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called GABA in the brain which slows down the central nervous system, producing a calming effect on the body.
While benzos can be effective in relieving symptoms in the short-term, they are not recommended for long-term use. Continued use of benzos can lead to tolerance, meaning higher doses are needed to achieve the same effect. This increases the risk of developing dependence, where the body becomes reliant on the drug and experiences withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop using it. Due to the highly addictive nature of these drugs, benzodiazepine addiction can occur when these medications are used both in and outside of prescribed guidelines.
To safely treat benzodiazepine addiction, treatment requires a medically supervised detox and gradual withdrawal, combined with therapy and drug addiction counseling. These services work to prevent the life-threatening side effects of benzo withdrawal while removing the drugs from the clients system and provide healthy skills to cope with triggers and cravings.
Stimulants are substances that can increase the activity of the central nervous system, resulting in heightened alertness and increased energy that are commonly used to treat medical conditions such as ADHD and narcolepsy. With that said, stimulants can be found in various forms such as coffee, cigarettes, prescription medications, and illegal drugs.
Commonly abused stimulants include:
Stimulants are frequently misused and abused for their euphoric effects as well as for their ability to enhance cognitive performance and reduce feelings of fatigue. However, long-term abuse of stimulants can lead to addiction and a range of negative consequences. For instance, stimulant abuse can result in heart problems, strokes, seizures, and even death.
It is important for individuals who are struggling with stimulant addiction to seek professional help and support. Treatment for stimulant addiction often involves a combination of therapy, support groups, and medication.
Marijuana is a psychoactive drug known to produce a feeling of relaxation and euphoria. Abuse of marijuana can lead to increased tolerance, withdrawal symptoms when not using the substance, and a constant desire to use. This can result in dependency and addiction, causing negative effects on both physical and mental health.
Common forms of marijuana abuse include:
People may turn to marijuana abuse due to peer-pressure, a desire to participate in recreational use, or as a form of self-medication. However, it is important to note that marijuana can worsen symptoms of mental health disorders and lead to increased risks of psychological problems.
Treatment for marijuana addiction typically involves therapy sessions, support groups, and potentially medication to manage withdrawal or underlying mental health symptoms.
Hallucinogens can cause a variety of effects on the brain and perception, including visual distortions, altered sense of time and space, and intense emotional experiences. These drugs are known for their ability to alter a person’s perception of reality and create vivid hallucinations. On the other hand, these drugs can lead to unpredictable reactions and negative consequences For instance, many people report experiencing “bad trips” that trigger panic attacks, paranoia, and convulsions.
Commonly abused hallucinogens include:
Despite the belief that hallucinogens are relatively harmless, these drugs can be habit-forming and addictive. In addition to their potential for addiction, there are also serious health risks associated with long-term use of hallucinogens.
Treatment for hallucinogen addiction typically involves a combination of therapy, support groups, and medication. These services can help individuals address and heal from the underlying issues that may have led to their drug use, as well as develop coping mechanisms and relapse prevention strategies.
Inhalants are chemicals found in household products such as cleaning agents, paint thinners, and aerosol sprays. Inhalant abuse often stems from curiosity or peer pressure. In some cases, people may turn to inhalants as a cheaper alternative to other drugs.
Inhaling these house-hold chemicals is incredibly toxic and highly addictive. Inhalant abuse can have serious consequences on the body including damage to the brain, heart, liver, and other organs. For this reason, inhalant addiction is a serious issue that requires professional treatment.
Treatment for inhalant addiction typically involves detoxification to safely remove the chemicals from the body. This may be followed by therapy to address underlying issues and help individuals develop healthy coping mechanisms. Support groups, such as Narcotics Anonymous, can also be beneficial in maintaining sobriety and connecting with others who are going through similar struggles.

This program provides ongoing support through relapse prevention, coping skills, and counseling as clients transition back into normal life.
